A new tool could help you search for food stamps in Texas

Texas lawmakers want to get you to search for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a form of food stamps that has become a hot button issue in the state.

The proposal, sponsored by Rep. Randy Weber, R-Houston, is on a committee agenda this week.

“We’re not saying that you should be shopping for food, we’re saying that people need to be able to get a sense of where their food is,” Weber told the Austin American-Statesman.

He says his bill would allow people to easily find food assistance programs, but only if they know where to look.

He’s pushing the idea that people should use the same tool that the food stamp program uses.

The Texas Tribune thanks its sponsors.
